The purpose of EDUC 5323 is to help the pre-service teacher develop other views of how the classroom operates when the goal is open-minded teaching and learning. Differentiated instruction strategies enable the teacher to plan for academic diversity in order to reach every learner. The topics include learning theories, beliefs about diversity, constructivist research, student choices in activities and assessments, learning styles, Bloom's taxonomy, multiple intelligences, flexible goruping, tiered lessons, grading, and managing in the differentiated classroom.
The course is designed as a part of a continuing series of professional development modules for the pre-service educator and addresses the needs middle school and secondary teachers. Through reading, discussion, case studies, activities, and assignments the course focus is to increase the understanding of issues of differentiating instructional methods and techniques.
